3-circuit track carries three separate live circuits and a shared neutral in one profile, so one run of track can power three groups of spotlights that are switched or dimmed independently. Installation comes down to five steps: plan the circuits, fix the track, connect the live feed, join and close the runs, then fit and aim the spots. The feed connection is electrical work for a qualified electrician; the rest is straightforward.
How 3-circuit track works
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Track profile | Aluminium channel carrying three live conductors, a neutral and earth |
| Live end (feed) | Connects the mains supply to the track |
| Connectors | Join track lengths: straight, L-shaped, T-shaped, X-shaped or flexible |
| End cap | Closes the open end of a run |
| Spot adaptor | Clips into the track, selects circuit 1, 2 or 3 and powers the spotlight |
Because each spot chooses its circuit, one store can switch window displays, feature walls and general spots separately, or dim them on different scenes, from the same run of track. Our LED track lighting range uses a standard 3-circuit (4-wire) track adaptor.
Before you start
- Match the adaptor to the track. 3-circuit systems look alike but differ in profile. Tell us the brand and profile of your installed track and we confirm the matching adaptor on your quotation.
- Plan the circuits. Decide which spots go on which circuit, for example circuit 1 for windows, circuit 2 for walls, circuit 3 for general accent.
- Check the load. Add up the wattage on each circuit and check it against the current rating printed on the track and feed, with headroom.
- Plan the dimming. If circuits are dimmed, choose spots with a matching driver: Triac, 0-10V, DALI or Bluetooth. See the product pages for the options per series.
Step by step
- Isolate the supply. Switch off and lock off the circuit at the distribution board. Confirm it is dead.
- Mark the track position. Plan runs so spots can reach the displays at the right distance. As a guide, place track so spots aim at displays at around 30° from vertical, which limits glare and reflections.
- Fix the track. Surface-mount to the ceiling with the fixings supplied at the recommended spacing, or suspend on wire kits for high ceilings, or recess into a plaster ceiling with a recessed profile.
- Connect the live feed. The electrician wires the mains supply to the live end: the three lives to their circuits, neutral and earth, following local wiring regulations such as BS 7671 in the UK.
- Join and close the runs. Use straight, corner, T or X connectors to join lengths. Keep the track orientation consistent across joins so the earth side lines up. Fit end caps on open ends.
- Test the circuits. Restore power and check each circuit with a test spot.
- Fit the spots. With the power off, insert each adaptor, turn its locking lever until it is secure, and set the circuit selector.
- Aim and set. Restore power, aim each spot and lock the tilt and rotation. On switchable models, set the power and colour temperature on the fitting.
Choosing spots for your track
- Accent on products: narrow 15° to 24° beams. See the beam angle guide.
- Displays that change often: the zoomable track spotlight adjusts from 15° to 60° on the head.
- Long walls: multi-head grille track spotlights or linear track lights.
- Fewer SKUs: most of our track spot series can be supplied with an on-fixture switch for power and three colour temperatures, set during installation.
Common mistakes
- Mixing adaptors from different track systems.
- Loading one circuit and leaving the others empty.
- Aiming spots straight down onto displays, which causes glare and hard reflections.
- Fitting spots with the power on.
