Hotel Corridor Lighting

By KELVANO Lighting EngineeringLast reviewed

Hotel corridors want warm, even, glare-free light: anti-glare downlights at 2700K–3000K along the corridor, accent spots on artwork and room numbers, and dimming for a lower night-time level. EN 12464-1 sets around 100 lx for corridors. Deep-recessed optics hide the source as guests walk towards it, and light on the walls stops the corridor reading as a tunnel.

Hotel corridor lighting should be warm, even and glare-free: anti-glare downlights at 2700K to 3000K along the corridor, accent spots on artwork and room numbers, and dimming for a lower night-time level. KELVANO supplies the downlights and spots for corridors, lobbies and circulation areas, with switchable colour temperature on most series so one stocked model can match every floor.

Light levels and layout

EN 12464-1 sets around 100 lx for corridors. In hotels the aim is comfort as much as the number:

  • Space downlights evenly along the corridor centre line, or offset towards the doors so room numbers are lit.
  • Light the walls, not only the floor. Vertical light on walls and art makes a corridor feel wider and less tunnel-like.
  • Dim at night. A lower night-time level keeps corridors calm and saves energy, with full light restored for cleaning.

For light levels in other areas of the hotel, see the lux levels guide.

Downlights for the corridor

The KV-DL-101 anti-glare COB downlight is the corridor workhorse: 10 W to 30 W, Ra 90, white or black, with the light source set deep in the reflector so guests do not see it as they walk. Cut-outs from Ø105 to Ø200 mm suit most refits.

For a quieter ceiling, the mini pinhole recessed spotlight shows only a small dark point from below, and works well over artwork and room numbers.

Accent on art and features

One model for every floor

Most of our downlight and spot series can be supplied with a switch on the fitting that sets the power level and one of three colour temperatures on site. A hotel group can standardise on one model per size and set it per property, and the maintenance team keeps one spare that matches every corridor. The exact steps are confirmed per model on your quotation.

Colour temperature

Warm white, 2700K to 3000K, suits corridors and matches most rooms. Keep one colour temperature per corridor. See the colour temperature guide for more.

FAQ

Questions from specifiers

How much light does a hotel corridor need?
EN 12464-1 sets around 100 lx for corridors. Hotels often dim corridors at night to a lower level for guests' comfort, keeping enough light to find doors and room numbers.
What colour temperature suits hotel corridors?
Warm white, 2700K to 3000K, matches the rooms and feels welcoming. Keep one colour temperature along each corridor so the light looks consistent.
How do I avoid glare in a corridor?
Use deep-recessed anti-glare downlights so the light source is hidden as guests walk towards it, and aim accent light at walls and art rather than down the corridor.
Can corridor lights be dimmed at night?
Yes. Our downlight and spot series are available with Triac, 0-10V, DALI or Bluetooth dimming, so corridors can run a lower night-time level from the building control system or a simple timer.
Do hotel corridors need fire-rated downlights?
Where a ceiling forms part of a fire barrier, building regulations may require fire-rated downlights. Our downlights are not fire-rated to BS 476 Part 21; where the ceiling is rated, the installer fits a tested fire hood over the fitting.
