Jewellery Store Lighting

By KELVANO Lighting EngineeringLast reviewed

Jewellery needs small, bright, narrow beams at Ra 90 or higher over a softer general level. Sparkle comes from many small reflections off facets, so compact sources with 15°–24° beams work better than broad diffuse light. Warm 3000K deepens gold; 4000K–5000K keeps diamonds and white metals bright. Ask for R9 as well as Ra on coloured stones.

Jewellery store lighting illustration, KELVANO

Jewellery store lighting uses small, bright, narrow beams at Ra 90 or higher on the pieces, over a softer general level, so diamonds sparkle, gold looks rich and gemstones show their true colour. KELVANO supplies the pinhole downlights, dimmable spots and track spots that jewellery and watch stores depend on, with switchable colour temperature on most series so each counter can match its collection.

What jewellery lighting has to do

Goal How What we supply
Sparkle Small sources, narrow 15° to 24° beams Mini pinhole recessed spotlight, LED track lighting
True colour Ra 90 or higher Ra 90 series on our spot and downlight pages
Contrast Accent light well above the surrounding level Dimmable recessed spotlight
No glare Deep-recessed optics, aimed away from customers’ eyes Deep recessed adjustable spotlight
Comfortable faces Soft light at the counter and mirrors Anti-glare COB downlight

Light for sparkle

Sparkle is many small reflections from facets. It needs point-like light sources, not large diffuse panels.

  • Narrow beams: 15° to 24° spots aimed at counters and cases concentrate light on the pieces.
  • Several sources per counter: two or three spots from different angles create more reflections than one.
  • Contrast: keep general light softer so the jewellery is the brightest thing in view.

The mini pinhole recessed spotlight shows only a small dark point from below, keeping the ceiling quiet while the light lands on the counter.

Colour temperature by collection

Collection Colour temperature Why
Yellow and rose gold About 3000K Warm light deepens gold tones
Diamonds, platinum, white gold, silver About 4000K to 5000K Cooler light makes stones and white metals look bright
Watches About 4000K Crisp, clear dials and cases
Coloured gemstones Ra 90 or higher at the collection’s colour temperature True colour matters more than warmth

Most of our spot and downlight series can be supplied with a switch that selects one of three colour temperatures on site, so a store can set each counter to its collection from the same stocked model. Exact settings are confirmed per model on your quotation.

Counters, cases and the sales area

  • Counters and cases: narrow spots aimed into each case from above, at an angle that keeps reflections off the glass towards the customer.
  • Try-on area and mirrors: soft, even light on faces from anti-glare downlights, not hard spots from directly above.
  • Window displays: the brightest accent in the store, with dimming for evening.

Dimming and scenes

Jewellery stores often run brighter accent light in trading hours and lower levels after closing. Our dimmable recessed spotlight has Triac dimming as standard, and DALI and Bluetooth drivers are available for scenes. See the LED dimming guide for the options.

For recommended levels in the wider store, see retail store lighting and the lux levels guide.

FAQ

Questions from specifiers

What lighting makes jewellery sparkle?
Small, bright, narrow beams. Sparkle comes from many small reflections off facets, so compact light sources with 15° to 24° beams create more sparkle than broad, diffuse light. Keep the surrounding level lower so the jewellery stands out.
Which colour temperature suits gold and diamonds?
Warm white, around 3000K, makes gold look rich. Neutral to cool white, around 4000K to 5000K, makes diamonds, platinum and silver look bright and white. Many stores light each counter to its collection.
Why is colour rendering important for jewellery?
Gemstones and metals are sold on colour. Ra 90 or higher shows rubies, sapphires, emeralds and gold as they really are, and customers compare what they see in the store with daylight.
Does LED lighting damage jewellery or watches?
White LEDs give off very little ultraviolet or infrared, so display cases stay cooler than with halogen lighting and delicate materials are better protected.
Can the lighting change through the day?
Yes. Dimmable spots let you raise accent levels during trading and lower them after hours. Triac dimming works with standard wall dimmers; DALI and Bluetooth allow scenes.
