Retail Store Lighting for Shops and Chains

By KELVANO Lighting EngineeringLast reviewed

Retail lighting works in two layers: an even base of anti-glare downlights, and an accent layer of aimable track or grid spots at Ra 90 so products hold their colour. EN 12464-1 sets 300 lx for general sales areas and 500 lx at the till. Track spots slide and re-aim by hand whenever the display changes.

Retail store lighting works in two layers: an even base of anti-glare downlights and an accent layer of aimable track or grid spots at Ra 90, so products look true to colour and displays stand out from the aisle. KELVANO supplies both layers for fashion, lifestyle and speciality stores, from single shops to chain roll-outs, with IES and LDT photometric files that can be measured for project specifications, and quotations within 24 hours.

Light levels for a store

EN 12464-1 sets the minimum. Stores that want to sell are designed above it, with accent light on top.

Area EN 12464-1 minimum Typical retail design What we supply
General sales floor 300 lx Base layer well above the minimum, even across the floor Anti-glare COB downlight
Till and service counter 500 lx Glare-free light on the counter Anti-glare COB downlight
Feature walls and mannequins : Accent at 3 to 5 times the surrounding level LED track lighting
Window displays : Strong accent, often narrow 15° to 24° beams Zoomable track spotlight
Display cases and jewellery : Small, precise pools of light Mini pinhole recessed spotlight, dimmable recessed spotlight

For the full table of recommended levels by space, see our lux levels guide. For choosing optics by ceiling height, see the beam angle guide.

The base layer: anti-glare downlights

The base layer should light the floor evenly without the light source showing when a customer looks up. Deep-recessed anti-glare downlights do this: the KV-DL-101 runs from 10 W to 30 W at Ra 90, in white or black, with cut-outs from Ø105 to Ø200 mm, so most old downlight holes can be reused in a refit.

For stores with exposed concrete ceilings that cannot be cut, the surface-mounted tiltable spotlight gives the same light from a surface body.

The accent layer: track and grid spots

Accent light is where retail lighting earns its money. It pulls the eye to the products the store wants to sell.

  • Track spots are the flexible choice. The LED track lighting range runs from 15 W to 32 W at 140 lm/W and Ra 90, with 15°, 24° and 36° optics, on standard 3-circuit (4-wire) track. When displays change, the team moves and re-aims the spots by hand.
  • Zoom spots suit stores that re-merchandise weekly. The zoomable track spotlight adjusts from 15° to 60° on the head, so one fixture can spot a mannequin one week and wash a wall the next.
  • Grid spots suit a cleaner ceiling. The square grid downlight and round grid downlight put pull-down heads that rotate 350° and tilt 90° into a recessed trim, with single and double heads.
  • Linear grille spots give a run of aimable heads in one body over long display walls: see the LED grille track spotlights.

For jewellery and watch stores, see jewellery store lighting.

Stock fewer SKUs across your stores

Most of our track spot and downlight series can be supplied with a switch on the fixture that sets the power level and one of three colour temperatures on site, with dimming available alongside. For a chain or its lighting distributor this changes the stock plan:

  • One model per size instead of one per wattage and colour temperature.
  • Set per store at handover: warmer and softer in a boutique, cooler and brighter in a sports store, from the same box.
  • Simpler maintenance: a spare from the shelf can be set to match the fittings already installed.

The exact steps are confirmed per model on your quotation.

Colour temperature by store type

Store type Common choice Why
Fashion boutique, homeware 3000K Warm, relaxed, flatters fabrics and wood
Lifestyle, department store 3000K to 3500K Balanced between warmth and clarity
Sports, electronics, pharmacy 4000K Crisp and bright, reads as clean and technical

With switchable colour temperature, the choice can be made on site after the store is dressed.

FAQ

Questions from specifiers

How much light does a shop need?
EN 12464-1 sets a maintained minimum of 300 lx for general sales areas and 500 lx at the till. Most fashion and lifestyle stores are designed well above that minimum for general light, then add accent light on displays at three to five times the surrounding level so products stand out. Send your floor plan. We can prepare a lighting layout for qualified projects.
Track lighting or recessed downlights for a store?
Most stores use both. Recessed anti-glare downlights give the even base layer, and track spots give the accent layer that the visual-merchandising team can move when displays change. Track suits stores that re-set layouts often; recessed grid and tiltable spots suit stores that want a cleaner ceiling but still need aimable light.
Why does colour rendering matter in retail?
Colour rendering (Ra or CRI) decides how true colours look under the light. Clothing, cosmetics and fresh products look dull under low-CRI light and customers notice the difference between the shop floor and daylight. Our retail track spots and downlights are Ra 90 or higher on the series confirmed on the product pages.
Can one fixture work across several store formats?
Yes, on most of our track spot and downlight series. A switch on the fixture selects the power level and one of three colour temperatures on site, and dimming is available alongside. A chain can standardise on one model per size and set it per store, instead of ordering a different variant for every format.
Do you supply lighting for a store roll-out?
Yes. Orders run from 50 units to full chain roll-outs. We quote within 24 hours. We can prepare a lighting layout for qualified projects. Every store in the roll-out is then lit to the same standard.
