Warehouse and Industrial Lighting

By KELVANO Lighting EngineeringLast reviewed

Warehouse lighting combines four fittings: high bays for open halls with high ceilings, linear fittings along racking aisles, sealed IP65 tri-proof for cold and damp areas, and floodlights for loading yards. EN 12464-1 sets 100 lx for storage, 150 lx for manned gangways between racks and for loading bays, and 300 lx for dispatch and packing.

Warehouse lighting combines four fittings: high bays for open halls with high ceilings, linear runs along racking aisles, sealed IP65 tri-proof lights for cold and damp areas, and floodlights for loading yards. KELVANO supplies all four, so a distribution centre, factory or cash-and-carry can be lit from one supplier, with a quotation within 24 hours. We can prepare a lighting layout for qualified projects.

Light levels by area

EN 12464-1 sets the maintained minimum for each task. Busy picking and inspection areas are usually designed above it.

Area EN 12464-1 minimum What we supply
Storage and stock rooms 100 lx LED high bay lights
Racking gangways (manned) 150 lx LED batten and linear lights
Dispatch and packing 300 lx LED batten and linear lights, LED high bay lights
Loading bays 150 lx LED tri-proof lights
Cold stores, wash-down areas Task dependent LED tri-proof lights, round tube tri-proof light
Yards, gates and car parks Task dependent LED floodlights

For recommended levels across other building types, see the lux levels guide.

Open halls: high bay lights

In open areas with high ceilings, a high bay light spreads light across a wide area from a single point. High bays are designed for mounting heights typically above 6 metres. Below that height, linear or tri-proof fittings usually give more even light and less glare.

How far apart should high bays be at each mounting height?

Spacing is set by mounting height and beam angle, and on the calculated figures below it runs from about 8 m to 14 m centre to centre. The wattage per height band follows the high bay product page: 100 W for 6 to 8 m, 150 W for 8 to 10 m and 200 W for 10 to 14 m.

Mounting height Wattage Beam angle Beam diameter at floor (calculated) Suggested maximum spacing, centre to centre (calculated)
6 m 100 W 90° 12.0 m 8.4 m
6 m 100 W 120° 20.8 m 9.0 m
9 m 150 W 90° 18.0 m 12.6 m
10 m 150 W 60° 11.5 m 8.1 m
10 m 150 W 90° 20.0 m 14.0 m
12 m 200 W 60° 13.9 m 9.7 m
14 m 200 W 60° 16.2 m 11.3 m

Method: beam diameter = 2 × height × tan(beam ÷ 2). The spacing column applies two rules of thumb used for a first estimate: at most 0.7 × the beam diameter, so neighbouring beams overlap, and at most 1.5 × the mounting height. They are not taken from EN 12464-1, which sets maintained illuminance and uniformity rather than spacing. These figures are calculated, not a lighting design.

Racking aisles change the spacing

Run the fittings on the aisle centreline, typically with one row per aisle, and take the spacing along the aisle from the 60° rows in the table.

Why the table is a starting point

EN 12464-1 sets the maintained illuminance for each task area, and a layout also accounts for surface reflectances, racking and the maintenance factor. For the light levels by area, see the lux levels guide, and for how beam angle changes coverage, see the beam angle guide. Damp and cold zones suit the LED tri-proof lights instead. We can prepare a lighting layout for qualified projects.

Racking aisles: linear runs

Between tall racks, the light has to reach the rack faces from the top shelf to the floor so pickers can read labels. Linear runs mounted along the aisle do this better than round fittings between the racks. Our LED batten and linear lights link into continuous runs, and the twin-row linear track light puts light on both sides of an aisle from one run.

Damp, cold and dusty areas: tri-proof

Cold stores, wash-down rooms, loading docks and dusty production areas need sealed fittings. Our LED tri-proof lights are IP65, the slim tri-proof linear light suits lower ceilings and narrow spaces, and the round tube tri-proof light has a smooth body with stainless steel end caps for areas that are washed down often.

Outside: yards and loading areas

Loading yards, gates and staff car parks need outdoor area light. Our LED floodlight has a die-cast aluminium housing marked IP66 and an adjustable bracket for walls and poles.

Replacing old fluorescent and metal halide fittings

Many warehouses still run fluorescent battens and metal halide high bays. Replacing them with LED usually cuts energy use substantially and removes the warm-up delay of metal halide lamps, so lights can be switched off in unused aisles and back on instantly. Send us your current fitting list and we calculate the replacement and the expected saving for your hours of use.

Plan your warehouse lighting

Send your floor plan, ceiling height, racking layout and the areas that are cold or damp. We return a fixture schedule for the hall, aisles, docks and yard, with a quotation within 24 hours. We can prepare a lighting layout for qualified projects. Orders run from 50 units to full projects.

FAQ

Questions from specifiers

How much light does a warehouse need?
It depends on the task. EN 12464-1 sets maintained minimums of 100 lx for storage and stock rooms, 150 lx for manned gangways between racks, 150 lx for loading bays and 300 lx for dispatch and packing areas. Picking faces and inspection areas are usually designed higher. We can prepare a lighting layout for qualified projects.
High bay or linear lighting for a warehouse?
Use high bays for open areas with high ceilings, where a round fitting spreads light over a wide floor. Use linear runs along racking aisles, where the light needs to reach the rack faces from top to bottom. Most warehouses use both.
Which fittings suit damp or cold areas?
Cold stores, wash-down areas, loading docks and car park decks need sealed fittings. Our LED tri-proof lights are IP65 for these areas.
What mounting height suits a high bay?
High bays are designed for high ceilings, typically above 6 metres. Below that, linear or tri-proof fittings usually give more even light with less glare. Send your ceiling height and we recommend the fitting and spacing.
Do you supply full warehouse projects?
Yes. Orders run from 50 units to full projects covering the hall, racking aisles, dock doors and yard. We quote within 24 hours. We can prepare a lighting layout for qualified projects.
How far apart should 150 W high bays be at 10 m?
On the calculated figures, about 14.0 m centre to centre with a 90° beam, and about 8.1 m with a 60° beam. This uses two rules of thumb for a first estimate, not a standard. This is calculated, not a lighting design.
Which beam angle should I use between racking?
A 60° beam, with the fittings on the aisle centreline and spacing taken along the aisle. Open floors take 90° or 120° beams.
Can a spacing table replace a lighting layout?
No. The table is calculated from mounting height and beam angle. A layout also accounts for reflectances, racking and the maintenance factor against the EN 12464-1 illuminance for each task. We can prepare a lighting layout for qualified projects.
