Lumens Explained: Brightness, Watts and How Much You Need

Lumens measure the total light a fitting puts out; watts measure the power it draws. For LED, watts = lumens ÷ lumens per watt, so a 140 lm/W fitting gives 2,000 lumens from about 14 W. 1,000 lumens is roughly an old 75 W incandescent bulb. To size a room, multiply target lux by floor area and divide by about 0.5 for losses.

1,000 lumens is about as bright as an old 75 W incandescent bulb; for LED, watts = lumens ÷ lumens per watt, so a 140 lm/W fitting gives 2,000 lumens from about 14 W. Lumens measure the total light a fitting gives out, watts measure the power it draws, and lumens per watt (efficacy) links the two. Below: the equivalents, the conversion, and how many lumens a space needs.

Lumens, watts and efficacy

Term What it measures Unit
Luminous flux Total light leaving the fitting Lumens (lm)
Power Electricity the fitting draws Watts (W)
Efficacy Light per unit of power Lumens per watt (lm/W)
Illuminance Light landing on a surface Lux (lx) = lm/m²

For incandescent bulbs, watts were a rough guide to brightness because every bulb had similar efficacy. For LED, efficacy varies a lot between products, so compare lumens, not watts.

How bright is it? Old bulb equivalents

The EU uses these equivalents on lamp packaging:

Old incandescent Equivalent output
25 W about 250 lm
40 W about 470 lm
60 W about 806 lm
75 W about 1,055 lm
100 W about 1,521 lm

So 1,000 lumens sits just below a 75 W bulb. In a shop, that is a small accent spot, not general light for a room.

Lumens to watts for LED

Watts ≈ lumens ÷ efficacy (lm/W)

Target output At 100 lm/W At 120 lm/W At 140 lm/W
1,000 lm 10 W 8 W 7 W
2,000 lm 20 W 17 W 14 W
3,500 lm 35 W 29 W 25 W
4,500 lm 45 W 38 W 32 W

Our LED track lighting series run at 140 lm/W: the 25 W model gives 3,550 lm and the 32 W model 4,500 lm.

Compare fitting figures, not chip figures. An LED chip can be rated well above 200 lm/W, but optics, drivers and heat reduce what leaves the fitting. Always ask for the fitting efficacy, and for IES files that show the measured output.

How many lumens do you need?

Start from the light you need on the surface, in lux, then work back to lumens:

Total lumens ≈ target lux × area (m²) ÷ 0.5

Space Target Area Total lumens
Shop sales floor 300 lx 100 m² about 60,000 lm
Till area 500 lx 10 m² about 10,000 lm
Warehouse storage 100 lx 1,000 m² about 200,000 lm

Divide by the output of one fitting for a first count, then check spacing and beam angle. Targets by space are in the lux levels guide; optics are in the beam angle guide.

Lumens by fitting type

Fitting Typical use Our range
Accent track spot Displays, mannequins LED track lighting: 2,050 to 4,500 lm
Anti-glare downlight General light, corridors KV-DL-101: 1,450 to 4,300 lm
Double-head grid High ceilings, two targets KV-GR-102: up to 7,200 lm
Recessed tiltable spot Boutiques, hotels KV-SP-105: 1,400 to 4,400 lm

Most of our track spot and downlight series can be supplied with a switch that sets the power level on site, so one fitting can deliver more or fewer lumens as the space needs. Steps are confirmed per model on your quotation.

FAQ

Related questions

How bright is 1000 lumens?
About the same as an old 75 W incandescent bulb, which gave roughly 1,055 lumens. In commercial lighting, 1,000 lumens is a small accent spot or a compact downlight: enough to light a display or a small area, not a whole room.
How do I convert lumens to watts for LED?
Divide the lumens by the fitting's efficacy in lumens per watt. At 140 lm/W, 2,000 lumens needs about 14 W. There is no fixed conversion, because efficacy differs from one fitting to another.
Are more lumens always better?
No. Lumens measure total output, not how well the light is used. A fitting with the right beam angle can light a display with fewer lumens than a brighter fitting that spills light everywhere. Check the lux on the surface, not only the lumens.
How many lumens do I need for a room?
Multiply the target lux by the floor area in square metres and divide by about 0.5 for losses. A 100 m² shop floor at 300 lx needs about 60,000 lumens in total. See the lux levels guide for targets by space.
What is a good lumens per watt figure?
For commercial LED fittings, figures around 130 to 150 lm/W are common for efficient designs. Our track spot series on the product pages reach 140 lm/W. Compare fitting figures, not LED chip figures, which are always higher.
